Dry Valleys, Antarctica

'Lest some of you think Antarctica is a continent covered entirely by a mile thick layer of ice, here's some images of the Dry Valleys that a friend took.  She said it was very windy, cold and beautiful. A majestic, strangely stunning place with rocks shaped and scoured by the wind.

Pegasus Penguin

My buddy, the Emperor penguin at MP 13, has moved into Pegasus and seems right at home...

...in the middle of Pegasus town.

I was crawling on my belly to get closer.
So the horizon is a bit skewed.

Beautiful coloring.

Happy feet.

Farewell & a wave goodbye.
Such a show off.

February 4, 2013

Today is Monday, February 4th and the Russian Icebreaker made an appearance off Hut Point, a sign of good things to come. First the Icebreaker, then the tanker, then the re-supply vessel and finally the USAF cargo jet to take us all back to the world of color and warmth, fresh fruit and veggies.  Also, today is Christina's first day at her new job. Good luck, rock their world!  I know you will be awesome.  For us football fans, the Superbowl starts in a couple hours, after endless pre-game analysis and highlights. And finally, I have the day (night) off!  It's a great day!

Here are some random photos I've taken recently.
An alternative form of transportation,
a snowboard and kite.  Looks like fun!

What, an alien?

A grill on a snow sled, coming back from a field camp.

Moon over Mt Erebus and McMurdo.

Pressure Ridges near Scott Base.
The white line below the horizon is the ice road.

MP 13 Emperor Penguin

At Milepost 13 on the road to Pegasus sits a large Emperor Penguin molting.  He's very entertaining and quite photogenic.  If my passengers are so inclined I stop to allow them to take photos.

Combat Offload

Once in awhile the LC-130 crews will practice combat offloads at Pegasus.  A combat offload is when the plane opens the rear cargo ramp and pushes the pallets down the ramp while the plane is moving.
